Illinois Sales Tax Rate Change Effective August 1, 2026

Illinois is implementing a sales and use tax rate change that may affect businesses making sales in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties. Effective August 1, 2026, the Northern Illinois Transit Authority (NITA) occupation and use tax rate will increase by 0.25% in these counties.

This change may apply to businesses that collect or remit sales tax on general merchandise, qualifying groceries, qualifying drugs and medical appliances, titled or registered items, cannabis, and aviation fuel.

If your business collects sales tax, now is a good time to review your point-of-sale system, accounting software, cash register settings, and any third-party sales tax tools to make sure the correct rates are applied beginning August 1. If you use a software provider, we recommend confirming that the update will be made before the effective date. If you have questions about whether this change applies to your business, please reach out to your CJBS advisor.

Back-to-School & College Planning

As families prepare for the back-to-school season and college transitions, now is a good time to review education-related expenses and planning opportunities.

This may include 529 plan contributions, tuition payments, student loan considerations, and potential tax credits or deductions. A quick review now can help ensure you are organized before year-end and making the most of available opportunities. If you have questions about education planning or how these expenses may affect your tax situation, our team is here to help.

Warmly,

The CJBS Team
